Pop superstar Michael Jackson canceled a sold-out performance shortly before he was supposed to take the stage Monday night because of swollen vocal chords, his publicist said.

The decision, announced about 40 minutes before the start of the show, was made on advice of the singer's physician, publicist Lee Solters said.Tuesday's sold-out performance also was canceled, and both will be rescheduled at a later date.

An estimated 30,000 ticketholders at the Sports Arena were told to save their stubs for admission to the new shows, Solters said.

Jackson began a six-concert engagement Sunday night as part of his worldwide tour promoting his "Bad" album.
