The Chinese film "Woman Demon Human," based on an ancient folk tale, won the top honors at the Rio de Janeiro international film festival recently, organizers said. Directed by 48-year-old Huang Shuquin, the film beat 14 other entries to win the annual festival's Golden Toucan award. The film, entitled "Ren Gui Quing" in Chinese, portrays an actress in a traditional Chinese opera who sees her life become enmeshed in the tragic roles she plays. Special jury awards at the 10-day festival went to the Australian film "The Year My Voice Broke" and the Belgian entry "Le Maitre de Musique" (The Music Teacher). Films from France, Yugoslavia and Argentina were also honored at the festival.
