A former Clearfield High School teacher will serve at least 60 days in jail after pleading guilty to sexually abusing three of his male students while fitting them for costumes for the school's Christmas pageant.
Norman A. Maxfield, 44, 1273 W. 26th North, Clinton, pleaded guilty to forcible sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor, both second-degree felonies, in a plea negotiation with the Davis County attorney's office.Judge Rodney S. Page Tuesday sentenced Maxfield to two one-to-15-year prison terms and fined him $10,000 on each charge. Page then stayed the prison terms and all but $2,500 of the fines.
He ordered Maxfield to serve a year in the Davis County Jail, to be reviewed in 60 days, to undergo psycho-sexual evaluation and continue his current therapy, and to pay the costs of any counseling required by his victims.
The judge also ordered Maxfield, who resigned from teaching after the charges were filed, not to take on any employment that puts him with teenage boys without another adult present.
Maxfield admitted to fondling three teenage boys in 1986 and 1987 while fitting them for costumes for the high school's Christmas pageant.
Defense attorney John Hutchison Tuesday argued against any jail time, saying Maxfield has already lost his profession and standing in the community and is treatable. Maxfield made no statement.
Page said his sentencing decision was made to balance his obligations of rehabilitation for Maxfield, protection for the rest of the community, and deterrence.
