University of Utah chemistry professor J. Calvin Giddings has become the first American-born scientist to earn the Martin Award - the highest honor bestowed by the Chromatographic Society of the United Kingdom.

Giddings has also been awarded the Merit Award from the Chicago Chromatography Discussion Group.Chromatography is a method used worldwide to analyze complex environmental and biological materials.

Author of two books and 300 publications, Giddings has been at the U. since 1957 and has earned more than 20 awards, including an honorary doctorate degree from Sweden's University of Uppsala.
