Geneva Steel has shut down a blast furnace and an open-hearth furnace because of a 25 percent decline in steel product orders.

"There will be internal work force adjustments with no anticipated layoffs," said E.B. "Bud" Patten, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Geneva Steel. Workers will be moved into such areas as maintenance, according to Mary Kay Lazarus, spokeswoman.Six months ago, the plant was operating at 92 percent capacity, Lazarus said, explaining the plant is now operating at a capacity in the high 70s. Lazarus was unsure how many employees would be relocated.
