Trevor Tutu, the son of Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was ordered to appear in court Monday to face charges in a bomb scare involving a Boeing 737 jet on a domestic flight, officials said.

Tutu, 33, was arrested in the terminal of East London's airport during a layover Sunday after threatening to "activate" a device unless he was allowed back on the aircraft.Tutu, who had disembarked to buy a newspaper, refused to pass through a security check and metal detector, a spokesman for the Law and Order Ministry said.

South Africa Airways said it was not clear if Tutu actually threatened to blow up the aircraft carrying 53 passengers but that his remarks to police prompted airport authorities to order a thorough search of the jet.
