Paraguay's best-known author, Augusto Roa Bastos, has returned after 42 years in exile to a raucous welcome from dozens of friends, fans and family members.

Roa Bastos, 72, left Paraguay voluntarily during a period of political upheaval in 1947 and returned briefly in 1982, only to be expelled by the government of ousted President Alfredo Stroessner for being "subversive."
