Piers Anthony is among the most talented writers on the science fiction and fantasy scene, and that talent is the sole redemption of his latest release, "Unicorn Point."

The sixth in Anthony's "Apprentice Adept" series, "Unicorn Point" fails where many such tomes falter. The excitement and din of a good idea become a dull drone, like the hum of an ever-present appliance that is noticed only when it stops, until the story is barely able to sustain itself, let alone the reader's interest. The concept of meshing science fiction with fantasy by blending the worlds of technology and magic - in this case the worlds of Proton and Phaze - continues to work, due entirely to Anthony's imagination and ability. But in this next generation, it takes on a soap opera quality.
