The U.S. Cycling Federation named it's 10-member men's team Friday that will compete in the 1989 World Cycling Championships next month in Chambery, France.
The four men picked on the U.S. time trial squad are: James Copeland, 27, Cary, N.C.; John Frey, 30, Albuquerque, N.M.; Mike McCarthy, 21, New York City; and John Stenner, 24, Boulder, Colo.And the U.S. road race team will include: Rishi Grewal, 21, and Nate Reiss, 25, both of Boulder, Colo.; Steve Larsen, 19, Davis, Calif.; Greg McNeill, 21, Ojai, Calif.; Matt Newberry, 22, Reno, Nev.; and John Tomac, 21, Chatsworth, Calif.
Grewal won the men's 100-mile road race at the U.S. National Cycling Championships Thursday in Deer Valley. McNeill finished third in the same race as Grewal won by 13 seconds.
The team time trial race at the World Cycling Championships is scheduled for Aug. 23 and the road race competition for Aug. 26.
The men's team was selected based on results from the national championships during the past week at Park City, Utah.
The women's road racing team will be named following the conclusion of the women's Tour de France this weekend, officials said. But Juliana Furtado, 22, Boulder, Colo., earned an automatic berth following her victory Thursday in the women's 50-mile road race at the national meet.
