The Utah Broadcasters Association handed out its annual UBEE Awards last week, and Park City radio station KPCW (FM-91.9) dominated the competition among the state's smaller radio stations, receiving nine different honors. KSL (AM-1160) won top honors in two news divisions among the larger stations.

KPCW captured first in the public service announcements division with Mike Phillips' "Art's Center," was honored in the multifaceted public service campaign division with "Election '88 Promo" by Phillips and Blair Feulner; and also won with a multifaceted promotional campaign, "Romancing The Park," produced by Phillips, Feulner, Susan Feulner, Joram Litchenstein and Frankie Hague.The Park City station was also recognized in the best entertainment program division with "Kids Eyewitness News," by Betsey Bacon and Park City Middle School; and also in the best public affairs program with "KPCW Morning News Magazine," by Nan Chalat.

"Park City vs. EPA" was still another KPCW program honored in the in-depth news reporting category.

KPCW's final three honors were in the best news coverage of a single event ("Election '88); in the best newscast division with "KPCW 8:30 News," by Feulner, Chalat and Ric Brough; and in the best lifestyle broadcast with "Park City People" by Feulner, Chalat and Brough.

(Note: KPCW can be heard only in the Park City area itself - on the east side of Parleys Summit.)

KSL radio won first in the single reporting division for "Hostages at Yellowstone," by Derek Marquis and Bob Schildmeyer. The station also received top honors in the best newscast category with "U.S. Returns to Space" by Rod Arquette.

Manti's KMTI (AM-1590) was honored in the 60-second commercial division for "Mama Butch's Pizza" by Kathy Farnsworth. KSFI (FM-100.3) and sister station KDYL (AM-1280) were recognized in the large station division for Rob Wray, Steve Miner and Chere Wood's "Don Pedro's" commercial.

In the 30-second radio commercial category, KCPX (FM-98.7) won in the large division with "Ked's/Nord-strom's" by Scotty Mac and Eric Fraser, while Richfield's KSVC/KKWZ was honored among smaller stations for "Randy's Auto Clinic" by Kurt Watts.

"Utah Opera Live-Die Fledermaus" won in the entertainment division for KBYU (FM-89.1). It was produced by James Clark, Reginald Pontius and Steven Carlson. KBYU also won in the lifestyle division with "Hans Hotter - An 80th Birthday Tribute," by Clark and Walter Rudolph.

KUSU's "Etcetera," by Lee Austin received entertainment honors, too. Utah State University's KUSU also won with "Holly Faire" in the lifestyle division and in the single event, in-depth reporting with "Ute Tribal Dispute" and with "CAPSA Safe House," both by Austin.

"The Burr Trail/Conflict on the Colorado" by KUSU's Austin was also recognized for honors.

KRSP (AM-1060) won in the larger stations' public affairs division with its "Free Speech/Legislative Wrap-Up," by Nina Green and her "Sports/Malone Gets MVP" broadcast in the radio sports category also placed first.

Larry Jewell of KDXU/KZEZ's (AM-890, FM-93.5, St. George) won in the smaller station best radio sports category with "Utah Jazz vs. Indiana Pacers.

KREC-FM was also honored in the longer commercials category with "The Longhorn Cattle Drive" by Ed Comfort, Paul Valle and Mike Williams and also in the short commercials category with "Granny's

Teepe/You Big Go-rilla," by Williams and Mimi Legant.

KLCY (FM-94.1) was honored for its "Cash Clock" promotional campaign done by Dain Craig and Tele-scene.

KUER (FM-90.1) was recognized in the in-depth news reporting division with its "AIDS: A Utah Profile" story by Maria Shilaos and Larry Holt.
