When was the last time you heard regular season prep football games on local radio? It has probably been a long time, but this fall, WNN (AM-1510) in Salt Lake City plans to broadcast at least eight high school contests.
The first game to air will be Thursday, Aug. 31, 4:30 p.m. - Granger at Cottonwood.Tedd Frandsen, formerly of Price station KOAL, will perform the play-by-play duties.
WNN, alias "Winners News Network," also plans a series of personal interview shows with coaches and players from Olympus, Murray, Highland, Cyprus and other local teams for broadcast at 7:04 a.m. and 5:04 p.m., weekdays during the grid season.
The second broadcast game of the season will be Judge at Jordan, 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8.
-KTKK (AM-630) - Martin Davies (pronounced "Davis"), the British-accent personality on "K-Talk" from 4-7 p.m., has been let go by the station because of low ratings.
Davies' last day at KTKK was Wednesday and he will be replaced, at least temporarily, by Gayland Palmer. The changes were made by station general manager Starley Bush.
KTKK has also made several other unrelated programming alterations. "The Ray Breim" show has been canceled by the ABC News Network because of financial cutbacks and will no longer be available to "K-Talk" or any station. (Breim is a native of Ogden.)
The Micheal Jackson Show has also been discontinued.
"K-Talk" will be picking up one new program, "The Rush Limbough Show," set to premiere Monday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. until noon.
This EFM Network show comes from New York and is currently airing on 140 U.S. radio stations with high ratings. Limbough is an arts conservative.
KTKK will announce a revised on-air lineup in the near future.
-KISN (FM-97.1/AM-570) - The station has named Jan Snyder as its news public affairs-news director.
She formerly worked for KSL as an on-air host, producer and community affairs liaison. Before KSL, Snyder was the public information officer for the Utah Arts Council.
At KISN, she will anchor the morning newscasts on "The Fisher and Todd Show," as well as produce and host a weekly public affairs program.
Snyder is a University of Utah graduate and received the 1989 Governor's Award for Reporting on Women's Issues.
-KBYU (FM-89.1) has won the 1989 Corporation for Public Broadcasting's "Development Award" for promotion and advertising.
The station received the honor for its "Tune Up To The Classics" promotion, in conjunction with KBYU's 1988 frequency change.
As a result of this promotion, the "cume" ratings for the station's target metro audience (persons age 50-plus) went up 76 percent.
The campaign was organized by Cathy Johns, KBYU public information director. McRay Magleby, art director of the BYU graphics department did the campaign's art work.
The campaign used billboards, bus signs, post cards and newspaper ads.
A related listener contest helped measure audience awareness and gave away a trip for two to New York City for the 1988 Gina Bachauer Piano Competition.
KBYU-FM will present another "Times and Seasons," a half-hour public affairs program on making marriage succeed Sunday at 9 p.m.
The program, part of a continuing series funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will explore the elements than make a marriage last in the face of a rising divorce rate.
Psychologist-therapist Dr. Joyce Brothers and sociologist Dr. Philip Kunz will be two experts featured on this public affairs program.
-KALL (AM-910) - The station will once again be broadcasting all of the University of Utah's football games. KALL's coverage will begin 50 minutes prior to kickoff times.
In addition, KALL will air the "Coach Jim Fassel Show" each Wednesday night from 7 to 7:30 p.m. starting Wednesday, Aug. 30.
The station is also broadcasting all games of the Los Angeles Raiders. The next game is Saturday, Aug. 26, when the Raiders play Houston at 7:33 p.m.
-KKAT (FM-101.9) is seeking listener input on ways to improve the station. Listeners can call 322-4332 with their ideas.
-ALL CHRISTMAS MUSIC - Just when you thought that radio format quality was looking up - following the demise of the all-Elvis format earlier this month at a station back east - this comes along:
Radio station WKXX-FM in Birmingham, Ala., started up an all-Christmas music format this week in the summer! Imagine listening to "Jingle Bells" in 90-plus degree summer weather. But, since the all-Elvis format survived for a year, this new format may last until January anyway.
In light of such weird radio format attempts, will there someday be the following:
- an all-John Lennon format?
- an all-Halloween music format?
- an all-advertising format?
- an all-movie soundtrack format?
