ZCMI, the department store chain headquartered in Salt Lake City, wants to start construction on two Boise stores by Jan. 1.

ZCMI officials said they are working to become the fifth major anchor store at the Boise Towne Square Mall.Boise's Oppenheimer Development Corp. this week submitted a proposal to the city's redevelopment agency to build a smaller ZCMI store at the site of the old Eastman Building, which burned to the ground in January 1987.

A second company also submitted a proposal for the downtown Eastman site. Continential Finance Corp. wants to build up to a seven-story office building there.

Boise redevelopment officials said they will accept competing proposals for the Eastman site for 30 days before selecting a developer.
