K. Fred Skousen, Peat Marwick professor of accounting at Brigham Young University, is the new dean of the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott School of Management at BYU.
President Rex E. Lee announced this week that Skousen replaces Paul H. Thompson, who was appointed vice president for development and university relations in June.The new dean's appointment is effective immediately.
"Although his specialty is accounting, Fred Skousen's vision has always encompassed the entire field of management," Lee said. "He will apply that broad vision now to build on the already great momentum and excellent reputation of the school of management."
Skousen graduated as valedictorian of the BYU College of Business class of 1965 and later earned a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Illinois. He taught at the University of Illinois and at the University of Minnesota, where he received a distinguished faculty award before joining the BYU faculty in 1970.
During the summer of 1969, he was a faculty resident on the staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C.
The recipient of numerous awards, Skousen won the Distinguished Faculty Award from BYU's College of Business in 1975, the National Beta Alpha Psi Academic Accountant of the Year Award in 1979 and the Karl G. Maeser Research and Creative Arts Award in 1980.
He is the author or co-author of more than 40 articles, research reports and books. Skousen served as director of research and as a member of the executive committee of the American Accounting Association from 1974 to 1976 and has many other professional affiliations.
He was founding director of the School of Accountancy at BYU and served as its leader from 1976 to 1984. It has been ranked among the top 10 programs in the nation. He also helped organize and was president in 1979 of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy.
