Fortuna School, 4630 S. Fortuna Way, Holladay, which was closed by Granite District in 1983 because of declining student numbers, will be put up for sale.
The Granite School Board made the decision Tuesday night based on projections that indicate the school will never be needed for district needs. It has been leased to Intermountain Christian School since being closed as a district school."The district will follow a longstanding policy of offering the building and grounds first to any government entity that has any interest," said Kent Gardner, Granite spokesman. He said the private school may want to continue to use the building, which has approximately 35,000 square feet of space on an 8.39 acre site. The Intermountain Christian School organization has not proposed a purchase to date, Gardner said.
The district wants to be rid of the expense of maintaining the building, which now needs attention to roofing and carpeting and other repairs, he said.
The decision regarding Fortuna School came on the heels of board discussion of another vacated school in the district, East Mill Creek.
When East Mill Creek was tentatively sold to a private school last year, it was with the stipulation that Salt Lake County agree to take over maintenance of the green space around the school.
Community residents were concerned when the school was closed that they also would lose the use of the adjacent playground and ballpark areas. The neighborhood does not have immediate access to any other recreation area.
The county has not yet come to any formal agreement with the school district on the property, Gardner said.
The board asked administrative staff to pursue the issue with the county so the matter can be resolved.
