Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakery, a regional baker with a 100-item line of goods, has closed and laid off nearly all of its 500 workers, union officials and a lawyer for the company have announced.
The 75-year-old bakery filed for protection from its creditors in August under federal bankruptcy law provisions. It listed $42.7 million in liabilities and $15 million in assets.David Gill, an attorney for the company, would not elaborate, and company officials did not return telephone calls for comment Wednesday.
Andrea Zinder, research director for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union local 770, which represents some of Van de Kamp's sales staff, said Van de Kamp employees told her the bakery was shut for good.
She and other union officials said the bakery dismissed most of its employees last week.
