The gunman who fired two shots during a Revolution Day parade on Red Square last week was trying to kill Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, the official Tass news agency said Thursday.

It said the gunman, 38-year-old Alexander Shmonov, told police after the incident: "I wanted to kill Gorbachev."Shmonov left a note in his pocket saying he had been preparing the assassination attempt for more than two years, Tass quoted KGB serious crimes investigator Pyotr Sokolov as telling the Communist Party's weekly Glasnost newspaper.
