The Detroit Tigers have banned beer from their home clubhouse because of a car accident involving alcohol last summer that may have ended the career of pitcher Charles Hudson.
"I thought about this a lot all winter," Manager Sparky Anderson said Monday. "That Hudson thing is dangerous. If this is a must, that you got to have alcohol, then you've got to go elsewhere.."Hudson was involved in an automobile accident after leaving a bar. He broke several bones in his ankles and legs and was placed on the 60-day disabled list Aug. 19. He is not on the roster this season.
At least two other major league teams, San Diego and California, have banned beer from their clubhouses.
"I'd hate to think anybody would drive away from here after having three-four beers in our clubhouse and have something happen."
Veteran Detroit players, contacted in an informal survey, said they enjoyed a beer or two after a game, yet did not object to the ban.
