The Mel Gibson-Goldie Hawn comedy "Bird on a Wire" soared at the box office, finishing on top with ticket sales of $15.3 million.

The Univeral Pictures release averaged $7,890 per screen, more than double that of the other new summer film, "Cadillac Man," according to figures released by Entertainment Data Inc."Cadillac Man," starring Robin Williams as a used car salesman dodging love gone bad, debuted in second place with $6.7 million. The poorly reviewed comedy should disappear soon, as a wave of other holiday titles arrives.

In third was the Richard Gere-Julia Roberts comedy "Pretty Woman," with receipts of $6.3 million. Fourth were the pizza-eating "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," with $3.3 million. "Ninja Turtles" has grossed more than $114 million.

Here are the week's top movie ticket sales:

1. "BIRD ON A WIRE," $15.3 million (first week).

2. "Cadillac Man," $6.7 million (first week).

3. "Pretty Woman," $6.3 million ($109.6 million, nine weeks).

4. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," $3.3 million ($114 million, eight weeks).

5. "Tales From the Darkside," $1.9 million ($12.2 million, three weeks).

6. "The Hunt for Red October," $1.8 million ($108 million, 12 weeks).
