DELTA CENTER’S 1ST CONCERT

For Utah teenagers, it was almost like visiting old friends, rather than having a new experience.

Los Angeles pop band Oingo Boingo, which has played to near-sellout crowds more than a half dozen times in Utah, had the honor of playing the Delta Center's first-ever concert Tuesday night. The quirky eight-member ensemble, which includes a three-piece brass section, played more than two hours. The show had patrons standing, dancing and singing well into the late hours.

Although there were some technical glitches, including some volume problems with vocalist Danny Elfman's microphone, it was certainly one of the loudest concerts heard in some time. Most of the 7,000-plus fans could feel the band's rhythm down to their bones. (See review on Page C7.)
