Two University of Utah professors have been appointed to the rank of distinguished professor.

Physics professor Fritz W. Luty and mechanical engineering professor Kenneth L. DeVries received the rank from the school's Board of Trustees. The U. reserves the rank of distinguished professor for individuals "whose achievements exemplify the highest goals of scholarship . . . and whose records include evidence of high dedication to teaching."Luty in an internationally recognized researcher in the field of solid-state physics and optics. DeVries, an associate dean of the College of Engineering, has been commended by the American Physical Society for "his fundamental studies of the atomic basis of polymer failure."
