Colombian cyclist Reynel Montoya was penalized after failing a drug test earlier in the race, the Tour de France organizers announced Saturday. The results were confirmed by a second analysis according to the rules of International Cycling Union.
Montoya, who was 52nd in the overall standings, had a time penalty of 10 minutes, which dropped him to 59th place, 1 hour, 23 minutes, 15 seconds behind the leader, Miguel Indurain of Spain.The Columbian was also relegated to last place in the 18th stage, where he was selected by lot to undergo a drug test. He was also fined $2,000.
Since it was his first offense, he was only given a three-month suspended sentence.
