Sports is invading FM radio in Utah. Up until now, AM radio has been the haven for play-by-play sports coverage. However, beginning this season, KLCY (FM-94.1) will join sister station KALL (AM-910) and air a simulcast of all University of Utah football and basketball games.

KALL/KLCY station manager Jan Bagley said that the addition of KLCY's statewide system of translators will give Ute sports the best coverage ever. He feels that this arrangement will benefit both stations, the U. and listeners. One noteworthy change is that KLCY will not broadcast the full pre- and post-game show segments. These will remain on KALL.

According to Bagley, radio stations in other states have gained strong audiences from FM broadcasts of professional sports teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Steelers.

- KSOS (AM-800, alias "Kool Gold") - The station has started a new Sunday music series, the "Elvis Presley Music Hour," with nothing but Presley music, for those 1950-60 music fans who still long to hear songs of the late performer.

The show airs from 10-11 a.m. Sundays with AM-800 host George Fredrick. Not only are some of the songs now on CD but the music includes songs not often heard.

- "Kool Gold" also has a new weekend DJ in David B. Smith. He's on the air Sundays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and previously worked at KRPN (alias "WKRP"). His new show features all of the hit songs of a particular year, ranging from 1956 to 1965.

He also involves major news events of each particular year and quotes the local positions of popular songs as they were ranked locally on the old KNAK radio.

- KUER (FM-90.1) - The final show in the sixth annual Red Butte Garden Concert series is Sunday, Aug. 25, 6:30 p.m. with blues guitarist and vocalist Buddy Guy and his six-piece band.

Tickets are $10 and available at the Kingsbury Hall box office (581-7100), open weekdays 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tickets will also be available the evening of the concert starting at 5 p.m. at Red Butte Gardens.

More information on the concert is available from the KUER events line, 581-6778.

- KBYU (FM-89.1) will air the American broadcast premier of John Adam's opera "The Death of Kling-hoffer," Saturday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 a.m. The show was taped at its world premiere in Brussels on March 19.

- KBZN (FM-97.9) - "The Breeze" will air another concert in the "New World Music Series," Saturday, Aug. 31, 7 p.m. This one will feature Acoustic Alchemy and Special EFX from Jersey City, N.J. The show will be recorded and played again on Labor Day at 2 p.m.

- Due to numerous requests, KBZN will begin broadcasting in September local recording artists each Sunday from 5-6 p.m. Interested musicians may call KBZN music director JaNae Francis, from 1-5 p.m., at 364-9836, for information.

- The Sunday, Aug. 25, "Musical Starstreams" (8-10 a.m.) will highlight Pete Bardens and the "Watercolor" album. "Jazz Trax," later in the day at 7 p.m. until midnight, will feature guest Grant Giessman. The Archives Album segment will be "Backstreet," by Davis Sanborn (1983).
