Dr. John M. Elzey, age 60, of Ogden, Utah, died September 27, 1991 in Ogden.

He was born August 1, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of John F. and Bernice Miles Elzey. He married Muriel Meyer February 3, 1951 in Ogden, Utah. He lived most of his life in Ogden. Dr. Elzey graduated from Ogden High School in 1949. A scholar throughout his life, he continued his education, receiving an Associate degree from Weber College, a BFA and an MFA from the University of Utah, and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. He also did post doctoral studies at the University of Hawaii and in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Elzey served locally, nationally, and internationally in many capacities, and received honors and accolades for his service.He was a member of the Ogden Arts Council, the Utah Arts Commission, Utah Alliance for Arts Education, and the American College Theatre Festival. He was producer of the Miles Goodyear Pageant in Ogden, and director for 2 years at the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. He received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the John F. Kennedy Center Of Performing Arts. He taught at Weber State for 32 years, and directed 54 plays during his career.

Survived by his wife of Ogden; two sons, and two daughters, Mark Elzey of Ogden, Utah; Brett Elzey, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Brent (Lynne) Beesley, Clinton, Utah; and Mrs. Bill (Sharon) Larkin, Salt Lake City; nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Bernice Miles Witten, Ogden, Utah; also surviving are two brothers, Lee Witten, Honolulu, Hawaii; Ron Elzey, Sacramento, Calif.; and one sister, Mrs. Larry (Arlene) Byrd, Carson City, Nevada.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary Chapel, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop Dexter Farr officiating. Viewing Monday, 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, 12-12:45 p.m., at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch. Military honors by VFW. Family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Weber State University Performing Arts Dept.
