Bruce Summerhays made it official Thursday as he won the Utah Section PGA golf championship at his home course, The Homestead.
Summerhays shot a final-round 73 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 11-under 205, two shots ahead of Jeff Green. But Summerhays really won the tournament two days earlier when he shot a course-record 62 to go six shots up on the field. He added a 70 in the second round and coasted home with his 73.Actually Summerhays wasn't trying to coast to victory. "I played well today, I just didn't make any putts," he said.
The fact that he designed the course and is the head pro, obviously helped the 47-year-old Summerhays this week. "It's a different type of golf course and you have to play it a lot to know it," he said. But he added there was a little extra pressure because he was playing in front of home course fans.
Summerhays earned $2,225 for the win. It was his third PGA section victory.
Green, the head pro at Stansbury Park, shot a final-round 71 and pocketed $1,700. Alpine assistant Kim Thompson was third at 209, followed by Stansbury's Tom Costello at 210 and Mountain View's Milan Swilor at 211.
In the senior division, Jeremy Ranch pro Lanny Nielsen won with a 225 total, three shots ahead of Hidden Valley's Don Johnson.
