New Green Bay head coach Mike Holmgren picked his first assistant Tuesday, naming former Utah head coach Tom Lovat to coach the Packers' offensive line.
Lovat, who coached the Phoenix Cardinals' offensive line the last two years, spent a season with the Packers in 1980 as an offensive line assistant to Ernie McMillan when Bart Starr was head coach.Holmgren, who is scouting the East-West game in Palo Alto, Calif., said earlier he expected to name 11 assistants to his staff. Holmgren was introduced Saturday as the successor to Lindy Infante.
Lovat, 53, first joined the Cardinals in 1981 when they were in St. Louis and coached the offensive line through 1984.
He was an assistant coach-offense for the Indianapolis Colts offense from 1985-88. In 1989 Lovat was the offensive line coach at the University of Wyoming before rejoining the Cardinals in 1990.
Lovat took his first coaching job at the University of Utah in 1967, moved on to Idaho State and then to Saskatchewan of the CFL.
Lovat returned to Utah as an assistant in 1972 and was named the school's head coach in 1974, a position he held until 1976.
Lovat played football at Utah, graduating in 1961.
