Whatever happened to Herman Brix (Bruce Bennett)? - J.T.W., LaGrange, Ga.

STATS: Born May 19, 1909, in Tacoma, Wash., as Herman Brix. Attended University of Washington. Married once, two children.IN EARLY YEARS: A top collegiate athlete, he won a silver medal in the shot put at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. That attracted the movies' attention and he made his bow in 1931 in "Touchdown." In 1935, he became the eighth actor to play Tarzan in "The New Adventures of Tarzan" both as a feature and a serial. He used his real name until 1939 when Columbia changed it to Bruce Bennett. In 1941, he moved to Warner Bros., where he had second leads in several top features: "Sahara," "Mildred Pierce," "A Stolen Life" and a memorable role in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre."

FAMOUS FOR: He's best remembered for his two Tarzan movies, "The New Adventures of Tarzan" and "Tarzan and the Green Goddess," in spite of appearing in more than 80 other features.

IN RECENT YEARS: Bennett continued to make movies into the 1950s and early 1960s, the last "The Outsider" in 1962. He did a little bit of TV. He went into the restaurant business, then into real estate in the Los Angeles area.
