Mary Ann Swenson, shown with her husband, Jeff, was installed as a bishop of the United Methodist Church Sunday night during services at Christ United Methodist Church. Swenson, a resident of Denver, is leader of 400 churches in a four-state region. She is one of only eight women ever elected to the denomination's highest office and the first woman assigned as bishop for the Denver area. The ceremony was among three installation services throughout the region. Present Sunday were representatives of other churches, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Swenson, 45, was raised in Jackson, Miss., and later served churches in Washington and California.
