Bettye Daly, wife of former PGA champion John Daly, on Friday said she did not press charges against her husband as a result of an altercation in which she reportedly was thrown against a wall of their home here.

In a brief statement issued through Daly's Washington, D.C.,-based attorney, Steven M. Frei, Bettye Daly said, "I was not struck or physically injured in the incident. I neither reported the incident nor requested the (Douglas County) sheriff's department to intervene."Daly, 26, was arrested by sheriff's officers and charged with third-degree assault last Wednesday for allegedly throwing his wife against a wall during an argument at a Christmas party he hosted the previous Sunday.

Sgt. Kim Castellano of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department said Daly was taken before a judge and posted $1,000 bond in accordance with the county's domestic violence policy.

According to the arrest affidavit, Daly's wife told sheriff's officers that her husband "just lost it," while drinking at the party.

The incident began when Bettye Daly, 40, asked a guest "if he could control his girlfriend as she was `hitting on John,' " the affidavit said. Daly threw Bettye Daly up against a wall and was pulling her hair, the affidavit said.

He then "lost his temper and destroyed the house," the document said.

Sheriff's officers found broken glass all over the home, smashed pictures on the floor, windows broken, a big-screen television pushed over, broken liquor bottles on the floor, two large holes in the basement wall and blood splattered on a wall in the basement.

Daly then allegedly left the home, and his wife said she thought "he went to Arkansas."

Daly, in the news release Saturday, said the incident was unfortunate and that he "deeply regrets it."

Frei said the couple is spending the holidays at their home here.

"We are committed as a couple to working through this problem in order to put it behind us," Daly said in the news release.

"I am deeply sorry for any embarrassment I may have caused my wife, family, friends or fans."

Daly, one of the longest hitters on the professional golf tour, won the PGA championship in 1991.
