President Francesco Cossiga formally dissolved Parliament and called for April elections, saying the body was no longer capable of orderly lawmaking and was in danger of bringing politics into disrepute.

Cossiga announced his decision in an address broadcast Sunday on state-run television and expressed the hope the new Parliament would dedicate itself to reforming Italy's political institutions.
