Barbara Mandrell says it took her four years to get the courage to drive again after suffering serious injuries in a 1985 traffic accident.

"Four years later, I still couldn't bring myself to drive a car," the country-music singer said in a 30-minute cassette tape promoting driver safety. "It wasn't until 1989 that I finally decided to apply again for a driver's license.""I find that I'm much more aware and defensive than I used to be," she said on the tape.

Mandrell suffered head, leg and other injuries in the two-car accident in suburban Nashville, Tenn. Her two children were injured and the driver of the other car was killed.
