Rock singer Melissa Etheridge has established a scholarship for performing artists at her old high school.

The scholarship at Leavenworth (Kan.) High School is in memory of her father, who died of cancer in August."He bought me my first guitar and he would come with me to bars in the area when I played because I was underage," she said Tuesday.

Etheridge, a 1979 graduate of Leavenworth High, was twice nominated for Grammys, in 1990 for "Brave and Crazy" and last year for "The Angels."
