The Ottawa Senators made goaltender Peter Sidorkiewicz of Hartford the No. 1 selection in the NHL expansion draft.

The Tampa Bay Lightning, had the next two picks and selected goaltenders Wendell Young from Pittsburgh and Frederic Chabot from Montreal. The Senators then took goaltender Mark LaForest from the New York Rangers.Just hours after the draft was completed, Tampa Bay general manager Phil Esposito traded Chabot back to the Canadiens for Jean-Claude Bergeron.
