Brigham Young's Anu Kaljurand, a native of Tallinn, Estonia, has won the women's heptathlon in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
She finished the two-day event Thursday with the third best all-time collegiate point total of 6,142.Sharon Jakofsky of Louisiana State was second with 5,969 points and Diane Guthrie of George Mason was third with 5,967.
In men's preliminary events, BYU's Oluyemi Kayode qualified for the 100 meters, finishing first in his heat in 10.1 seconds. Kerry Lawyer of Boise State and Steve Lewis of Idaho failed to qualify. Lawyer and Lewis covered the distance in 10.4 seconds.
Jason Pyrah of Brigham Young qualified in the 1,500, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 3:42.47. Teammate Dave Spence finished 10th in the same heat and failed to qualify.
BYU's Patrick Mitchell failed to qualify in the 110 hurdles. He was sixth in his heat in 14.14.
University of Utah high jumper Traci Stevens was one of five competitors to make the first cut at the 1992 NCAA Track and Field Championships, when she met the preliminary standard of 5'10 1/2. The leap sends Stevens into the finals, which will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday. Stevens previously qualified for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials with a personal best leap of 6'1 3/4.
