Singer John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas was in good condition after a liver transplant to replace the organ he destroyed with years of alcohol and drug abuse, his doctor said. "He's doing well. He's completely alert and moving around," Dr. Ronald Busuttil said Thursday. "He should be able to go back to a normal pre-illness lifestyle - as long as he doesn't drink or take any drugs." Phillips, 56, who had the operation July 4 at the UCLA Medical Center, has vowed to avoid the substances that led to near-fatal liver disease, Busuttil said.
