James W. Payne, 62, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1992 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City of heart failure.
He was born Nov. 11, 1929 in Ogden, a son of H. Joe and Erma Bennett Payne. He had lived in Woodland Hills, California for 35 years and in Ogden for the past three years. He graduated from Ogden High School, Class of 1947, and attended College of the Pacific. He was a member of the LDS Church.Mr. Payne had been a set decorator for Warner Brothers Studio in California. He was three times nominated for an Oscar, the first for "Come Blow Your Horn" and the second for the movie "The Oscar". He was rewarded for his outstanding sets by winning an Oscar for "The Sting". He was a long-standing member of the I.A.T.S.E. Guild.
Surviving are his mother, of Ogden; two brothers, Joe Boyd Payne, Ogden; Robert K. Payne, Mill Valley, California.
Funeral services will be held at the graveside Monday, 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, with Bishop Glen Eliason officiating. Friends may call at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
