President Ezra Taft Benson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, remains in serious but stable condition at LDS Hospital after being admitted Thursday afternoon with pneumonia.

President Benson, 93, spent a comfortable day at the hospital, church spokesman Don LeFevre said. His condition has remained unchanged since he was admitted."He's alert and responding to treatment," LeFevre said. President Benson is not in intensive care.

Benson has been LDS Church president since 1985.

The leader of the 8.3 million-member church has been in frail health in recent years. His last public appearance was his wife's funeral. Flora Amussen Benson, died at age 91 on Aug. 14, 1992.
