Production began this week of the 1993 Mustang Cobra at Ford Motor Co.'s Dearborn assembly plant.

The Cobra, one in a series of limited production vehicles from Ford's Special Vehicle Team, is a specially engineered sports coupe for driving enthusiasts. About 5,000 Cobras will be built.The Ford team's design efforts were focused on fortifying engine output, adding control and capacity to the brake system and retuning suspension parameters to achieve ride and handling gains.

The Cobra has a horsepower rating of 235, an increase of 30 hp over the current 5.0-liter powerplant.

The Cobra will go on sale regionally in about three weeks, beginning on the West Coast.
