The Milton E. Wadsworth Award, established by the international Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration to recognize distinguished research service to the professions, will be presented to Wadsworth himself.

SME announced that Wadsworth, distinguished professor of mining, metallurgy and exploration at the University of Utah, will receive the 1993 award that bears his name on Feb. 16, 1994, in Albuquerque, N.M. He will also present a distinguished lecture at SME's annual meeting.The award is given annually to an individual in recognition of distinguished contributions that advance the understanding of the science and technology of nonferrous chemical metallurgy.

Elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1979, Wadsworth is known for his research on the surface chemistry of mineral systems, hydrometallurgy, the kinetics of extractive metallurgy and electrochemical applications in mineral systems.

Wadsworth recently received an award presented only once every decade by SME and The Metals Society.

The university appointed Wadsworth to the special rank of distinguished professor of metallurgy in 1983. He holds honorary degrees from the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Liege in Belgium.

During part of his eight-year deanship in July 1991, Wadsworth served as president of the 100,000-member American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. He has also filled numerous other positions with AIME. Wadsworth is a winner of the U.'s Rosenblatt Prize, filled a Henry Krumb lectureship and won numerous other awards from professional societies and organizations.

AIME presented Wadsworth with its Mineral Education Award as the nation's top educator in 1988. He also received the Metallurgical Engineering Educator award in 1989 for his strong contributions to education in the fields of metallurgical and materials science and engineering.
