Residents polled at a public hearing would just as soon keep getting their phone service from US WEST, but if that is not to be, their second choice would be South Central Phone.
US WEST wants to discontinue providing the service to Hanksville, and South Central Phone and Art Brothers' Beehive Telephone are vying to take over.About a third of the town turned out for a Public Service Commission hearing Wednesday night.
Although a poll at the meeting showed most wanted to keep US WEST, a number of residents were critical of the company's service.

"Most of the times when it rains, our telephones go out," said Martin John. "Fortunately, it doesn't rain that often in Hanksville."
