I was disappointed to see the editorial position taken by both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News on a very interesting and important matter - the proposed privatization of the Olympic facilities.

It's not that I'm opposed to the position taken but that you've taken it so early without adequate public discussion. It seems to me that the fundamental role of the newspaper is to first generate public discussion regarding such proposals, to do in-depth objective stories on all the ramifications, to get public input from those who might have a differing viewpoint and then to take a position on the matter.

Your editorial writer has apparently done his research and has made up his mind, but his thinking has taken place in somewhat of a vacuum. His thinking hasn't been subject to the refiner's fire of public opinion and discussion because there hasn't been any.

As a citizen interested in the proposal, I must say that the newspaper hasn't given me enough information on which to make an informed decision. Your rush to judgment undermines the very purpose of your newspaper.

This subject has had nowhere near the public scrutiny it deserves, and I'm disappointed that the newspaper has not been more aggressive in asking the questions and posing the issues and creating a public forum for discussion of the proposal.

In fact, the rushed manner in which it is being pushed naturally raises questions and concerns. What is the hurry?
