Robert Duran, 42, fights for the 100th time in his colorful career tonight when he takes on Tony Menefee, 21, of Lincoln, Neb., who has a 19-1 record.
Even success in the politcal arena in his native Panama won't take him out of the ring, Duran said."My mother asked me to run for the Senate," said Duran, who is a candidate for federal deputy, hoping to represent the neighborhood where he was born.
The election will be in May.
"Of course, I will keep on fighting," Duran said. "I want the fifth title."
"I'm not really surprised he's still fighting," Sugar Ray Leonard, Duran's arch-rival of the 1980s, said in telephone interview. "With Duran, what's the alternative. He's always searching for the rainbow, even though he found it. I think certain guys are meant to do that."
