Alberto Tomba of Italy won a World Cup slalom today, bouncing back from a surprise loss in a giant slalom to score his 31st career victory.
It was the second straight slalom victory of the season for Tomba, and his his fifth World Cup victory at his favorite Sestriere course. He had an aggregate time of one minute, 58.38 seconds for the two runs down the demanding Kandahar course.Tomba, known as La Bomba "The Bomb," because of his explosive style between slalom gates, beat Austrian Thomas Stangassinger by 0.75 seconds.
Christian Ole Furuseth of Norway skied the fastest second run to finish third, 1.18 seconds behind the winner.
Furuseth improved nine places from the first run for his best slalom finish in two years.
Tomba had one of his worst performances ever in Monday's giant slalom in Val D'Isere, finishing 17th.
He wasted no time in putting in a claim for today's race, making a powerful first run. He had the fastest time, 57.75 seconds.
