Pay to protect himself from his fans? No way, says Howard Stern.

West Hollywood officials want Stern to put up $25,000 against possible damage and pay $14,000 for a day of police overtime during a book-signing."This is an amateur attempt at a shakedown," the raunchy radio host said Tuesday. The city said it only wants Stern to do what movie companies and rock bands do.

About 15,000 fans were expected Thursday at a Sunset Strip bookstore to get auto-graphed copies of Stern's best seller, "Private Parts."

Stern, who is based in New York, said he had not decided whether to go ahead with the appearance.
