A $100,000 grant from the city's community block grant fund will help get reconstruction of the Senior Citizen Center under way soon.
The City Council amended the community block grant allocations Tuesday to free money to rebuild the center. The money will be drawn from the housing rehabilitation revolving loan fund.To replenish the revolving loan fund, the council agreed to spend the remaining $100,000 of its share of 1992 Utah Valley Housing Consortium money. The council previously earmarked that money to purchase land and help start construction of senior citizen housing, said Konrad Hildebrant, federal programs administrator.
The Senior Citizen Center, which was located at 100 N. 400 East, burned down June 9. Investigators determined the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring.
The city plans to rebuild the center at the same site. It appears the insurance payment on the building will be inadequate to cover costs of a new building, Hildebrant said.
