Teaching pets good habits can begin any time after the third month, say veterinary experts. Behaviors, including house training, chewing, barking and jumping are best instilled by rewarding pets with a treat, they say.

According to Dr. William Ray, a veterinary-nutritionist, the way to a dog's heart is through its stomach. He offers these training tips:- Put your dog in a sitting position and establish eye contact when giving a command. Keep your hands low.

- Reward good behavior with praise and a healthful treat, rather than scolding a pet for bad conduct.
