Gov. Mike Leavitt is confident that his new appointee to the Utah Transportation Commission can resolve any potential conflict of interest resulting from his ties to one of the state's biggest road contractors.
"We don't have any reason to think that the issue won't be resolved completely. It's a matter of working out the details," the governor's spokeswoman, Vicki Varela, said. The nomination of Hal M. Clyde, a retired vice president and operations manager for W.W. Clyde & Co., to a six-year term on the commission is scheduled to go before the state Senate on Wednesday for confirmation.
Varela said the governor's office needs more information on what Clyde's role continues to be in the company, including whether he holds any stock or other financial interest.
Clyde reportedly is a stockholder and sits on the board of directors of the family owned company.
