The level of radiation emitted by cellular telephones is well within federal safety standards, according to a study released Friday.
The research was conducted by University of Utah professor Om Gandhi and the findings were presented at a conference in Europe. The study concluded that the amount of radiation absorbed by the body is four to five times lower than levels accepted as safe by U.S. scientists.A 10-year grant from the National Institutes of Health provided primary funding for the research. Additional funds were provided by McCaw Cellular Communications Inc.
The study evaluated 10 mobile phones from four different manufacturers and measured how much radiation a caller absorbs in the head, neck, shoulders and upper torso.
Reports of links between cellular phones and brain tumors sent shock waves through the industry earlier this year. But highly publicized lawsuits against cellular-phone makers have since been dismissed by the courts.
