A police officer and two East Oakland residents were killed Wednesday in a shootout that erupted during a confrontation over impounding a pit bull.
The dog owner, refusing to turn over his pet, allegedly fired a shotgun at police, fatally wounding Officer Bill Grijalva. Both the dog owner, Luke Grinage, 21, and his father, Rafael Grinage, who used a wheelchair, were killed.Grijalva, 41, married with two children, was nearing retirement. He was described by colleagues as an affable cop who enjoyed his foot patrols in Oakland's Fruitvale District.
The 60-pound dog, which was about to be quarantined for allegedly biting someone the day before, also was shot to death.
