Maybe the third time will be the charm for a dance club in Orem.
The City Council granted a conditional-use permit for Shane Hatch and Doug Daniels to operate a dance club in the gym at Paradise Health Spa, 1640 S. State. The Zodiak is the third dance club proposed for the business complex.Neither of the other businesses, including one approved by the City Council in September, materialized. Right off the bat, Hatch and Daniels will have to contend with one expense they'd rather not.
The permit approved by the council requires The Zodiak to clean up and light a parking lot on the southeast end of the shopping complex. Hatch told the council that requirement would be a financial burden on his business. He also said a front lot has adequate parking for his clientele.
But council members said the lot was a safety hazard in its current condition and would likely attract problems once the dance club opens. The council refused to drop the provision from the permit.
The Zodiak plans to cater to the college crowd with dances Monday through Saturday nights from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
The dance area can accommodate up to 621 people. The permit requires The Zodiak to have four certified security officers at each dance; two additional officers will be required at dances that attract more than 500 people.
The business also must provide ushers to guide patrons to parking spots.
