Though the cold days of winter make summer rodeos seem far off, it's not too early to prepare for upcoming rodeo queen competitions.

The 12th Annual Utah State University Rodeo Queen Clinic is set for March 17-19 on the Logan campus. The clinic provides training for young women who plan to participate in rodeo queen competitions and those who manage or judge the contests.Drawing young women from many states, past clinics have included young women who have gone on to take the National High School Rodeo Queen title and many others who have won state rodeo queen titles. Winners of those titles will be among the staff members of this year's clinic.

The clinic provides opportunities to hone skills in public speaking, modeling and horsemanship. Many portions of the clinic are videotaped, allowing young women to view their performances while receiving individual critiques from the clinic staff.

In addition, a photo session will be scheduled for each young woman, providing color photographs and negatives to use in upcoming competitions. Participants are urged to bring competition clothing they no longer use for the clothing swap, a fun and money-saving part of the clinic.

The clinic begins at noon, March 17 and ends at 1 p.m., March 19. The cost is $150 for prospective rodeo queens; $55 for parents and $80 for committee members, judges and coaches. Two college credits can be earned at the clinic for high school seniors and older participants. Enrollment is limited. Lodging is available on campus or in downtown Logan.
